Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient form of yoga which uses vinyasas, which link postures and breath to form dynamic sequences, creating a dynamic flow throughout the practice. Ashtanga is a sanskrit term, ashto means "eight", while anga means "limb". Each limb or stage in the eightfold path is a step along the path to self-realization. The eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga are :-
YAMA - moral codes
NIYAMA - self-purification and study
ASANA - the practice of yoga postures
PRANAYAMA - breath control
PRATYAHARA - sense control
DHARANA - concentration
DHYANA - meditation
SAMADHI - contemplation, self-realization or a state of bliss
Ashtanga is based on the teachings of the Yoga Korunta, written by the ancient seer Vamana Rishi and is believed to be somewhere between two thousand to five thousand years old but has been popularised in this century by the guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois who resides at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in Mysore, India. Ashtanga Yoga is organised into 6 series of postures starting with the Primary Series (Yoga Chikitsa) which aligns and purifies the body; Intermediate Series (Nadi Shodhana) which purifies the nervous system; and Advanced A,B,C, and D series (Sthira Bhaga) which integrates strength with grace of movement.
